Check-In

What is required to check in? You will need a valid, non-expired government I.D. or Passprt for check-in.

A credit card is required to reserve your room early. In addition, your I.D. card must match the credit card being used. Non-matching credit cards/I.D.s are not accepted.

A credit card authorization form is required for all third-party payments.

Check-in time is 2 p.m., and your entire room balance is required to be paid upon check-in, along with an additional $10 key deposit (which will be returned at the end of your stay).

If a clean bed is available, we may check you in a little earlier . Luggage storage is available in the meantime – for all travelers with an advanced reservation.

Our maximum stay is 14 days. For any stays longer than 14 days (such as for student housing or long-term J1 accommodations, please contact us.

Our age restriction is 18 years old and above; otherwise guests are required to be accompanied by an adult parent or legal guardian.

Temporary parking is allowed in our alleyway as you unload for check-in, with a 10-minute maximum. You’ll then be required to find long-term parking in the city (we recommend American West, a third-party parking garage not affiliated with our hostel).

No pets are allowed.

Reception is open 24 hours daily, although our staff may step away from time to time to set up breakfast or take care of the laundry. We are a small, family-owned hostel and ask you to please be patient until we return.

Check Out

Check-out time is 10 a.m., and you need to be out of the room along with ALL of your belongings (so our housekeepers can go in and clean everything). Any guest checking out after 10 a.m. will lose their key deposit.

Please bring your sheets and pillowcases down to the lobby upon checkout. You can place them in the hamper next to our front desk.

You are more than welcome to stay longer if there’s space, although no guest stay will be extended if there is an outstanding balance.

No airport shuttle is provided. You can use a third-party supplier such as Airport Express or use BART to reach SFO (from Powell Street Station).

Luggage storage is available to our guests, with all bags tagged and dated (we provide the tags). If you lose your tag, our staff will be unable to return your bags without approval, which may not be quick (or until we can verify ownership). No overnight luggage storage is allowed.

During Your Stay

Basic Manners

We ask that you please exhibit common courtesy to fellow guests, our staff and our San Francisco neighbors during your stay. We also ask you to act like a mature adult while staying here. Frowned upon behaviors include playing loud music without headphones, speaking on your phone as to disturb others, smoking in our alleyway, making noise on the outdoor fire-escape or not cleaning your dishes after use.

We are a friendly, down-to-earth hostel but reserve the right to ask you to leave at any time due to poor or disrespectful behavior, with no refund issued.

Dorm Rooms

When staying in a dorm room, we ask that you please be respectful of other guests. This means not using your phone loudly, being as polite as possible and being courteous if other guests have their curtains closed. Same goes for when you wake early – resist the urge to hit the snooze button one more time. Please be as quiet as possible.

We ask that you please check in to YOUR ASSIGNED DORM BED only, not the bed which is most convenient for you. We get it – one bed may look better than another, but someone else may already have the bed reserved, such as a bottom bunk for an older guest.

A bottom bunk can be requested but not guaranteed. If you prefer a guaranteed bottom bunk, please reserve a private room.

We wash/clean our dorm bed’s privacy curtains. If your curtains are being washed, please be patient until we return them to you later in the afternoon.

Lockers are located under your beds for secure luggage storage, but padlocks are not provided. If you desire a lock, you can purchase one from the front desk for $6 or head to our local Walgreens. A port charger is located inside your locker for safely charging your laptop or phone.

No sleeping bags or outside linens are allowed. We provide clean linens, blankets and pillows for each guest. You can place your sleeping bag in our luggage storage (tagged and labeled) for safekeeping during your stay.

You are required to carry your own luggage to your room. Our staff may volunteer to help, but we do not have luggage service. Guests’ luggage responsibility is their own while here, the same as when you’re traveling by train.

Outside guests are not allowed in the hostel. There are no exceptions. Outside guests can wait near the front desk, always in view of our receptionist.

No food is allowed in your room at any time.

We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please place a padlock on your locker to protect your luggage.

Amenities

Wifi is available in all rooms of our hostel; however, we recommend you put your electronics away to interact with others. Chess, puzzles and our cozy group lounge awaits. If our Wifi goes down (which happens from time to time), please be patient as we remedy the issue.

Our shared kitchen is available to our guests but is closed from the hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and again from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (for cleaning). If our staff is repairing the kitchen (which we do from time to time), you will need to wait until we’re done to access our back patio.

We ask that you please CLEAN YOUR OWN DISHES after use. If you do not – or choose to do so poorly – you will be warned and then asked to leave if the problem persists.

Breakfast is free to guests but only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Often called the 'best hostel breakfast in San Francsico'!

Our lobby and common areas are available to our guests, but we ask you to please be respectful in regard to the volume of your music or TV programs. If you are disrespectful, our staff reserves the right to create stricter rules. Quiet hours in all common areas are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

24-hour laundry service is available to our hostel guests, all self-serve. If there is a broken washer or dryer, this is temporary and we’ll repair the problem ASAP. Quarters for our machines can be purchased at our front desk.

Restrooms and showers are available, but we ask you to please be respectful while freshening up. Other guests may be waiting to use the restroom, and California is in a drought. Please be courteous in saving water. Those without towels can rent one from our front desk for $1.

No smoking is allowed in the hostel at any time. No smoking is allowed on our back patio or alleyway. This is California State Law, and also to respect our fellow guests and San Francisco neighbors. The same rules apply to vaping.

We ask for lower conversation levels in our alleyway, and no loitering in our alleyway from the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Please keep your conversations quiet so our fellow guests and neighbors can sleep!

Bike parking is available, but no guests are allowed to stay in the bike locker for longer than the time it takes to lock/unlock your bike. We ask you to please complete your repairs, adjustments and moving things around in preparation for your bike ride before asking our staff for locker access. No guest is allowed to stay in our storage room without staff supervision.

And finally, for storing your luggage, the same rules apply. Please grab your wallet, hoodie or book before asking our staff to open the storage room for you.

Cancellation Policy

When booking directly with us, we offer a 48-hour cancellation notice for private rooms and a 24-hour notice for our dorm beds. Any cancellation notice after these time frames will result in full charges.

When you reserve with an Online Travel Agent (Booking.com, HostelWorld, Expedia, etc.), you’ll need to contact these third-party suppliers for their individual cancellation policies. Make sure you cancel with them first - we can not cancel a third party reservation in advance if you do not. We are powerless until you change the reservation with your OTA.

We offer custom cancellation policies for J1 visa accommodations, student housing and group bookings for parties larger than 6 guests. Please contact us.

As always, reserving directly with us will result in the best rate, cancellation policy and peace on earth.

Independent San Francisco Hostel

We are a small, independent San Francisco hostel and reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. We are doing our best and ask you to be kind while here. Any disrespect directed toward our staff or guests will result in your being removed from our hostel. Otherwise, if you are a gracious traveler, please come and stay with us! Reserve Now >>
